Tips To Avoid Identity Theft
The internet has changed the way we lead our lives, in many ways. It has brought many positive aspects with it, but sadly, it has its dark side. One of the biggest problems that easy global communication has brought with it is identity theft; which has become one of the fastest growing crimes in the Western World. In the United States alone, incidences of identity theft have quadrupled in the last 5 years, with no signs of it abating in the near future. Identity theft attacks the consumer in many forms; however the majority of cases are credit card account hijackings.
Known in internet jargon as "phishing" scams, it means that confidence tricksters lie in wait for someone to inadvertently provide them with their identification details. This can be either their social security numbers, credit cards details or even their address or telephone number. Once the identity thieves gain access to the slightest scrap of identification details, then the way is clear for them to burrow their way under their innocent victim's skin, and slowly but surely assume their financial identity. They use this identity to steal as much money not necessarily from them, instead through using them, taking full advantage of the stolen identity as a platform. Their goal is to defraud the victim, the banks and the credit card companies out of as much money as much as possible and as quickly as possible.
Victims of identity theft stand to lose a lot of time and a lot of money. If the thieves gain access to your bank account details, they can rapidly withdraw any liquid capital that you have there. The time spent and aggravation caused can also be considerable. It may take years for victims of identity theft to get their lives back on an even keel.
Perhaps to understand how difficult the experience of having you identity stolen from you is the fact that the victims are regarded as being suspects. In a way, many victims bear a certain responsibility for what occurred, by failing to take the simple but necessary steps to prevent their identity being taken over.
Not difficult to remember but very important to implement they are as follows:
- Closely scrutinize your bank and credit card accounts on a daily basis. All the information is available online. Any signs of unusual activity, report it to your bank and credit card company immediately.
- Keep your checkbook in a safe place at all times. Not only is every detail of your identity that the identity thieves needs printed on it, they can very rapidly use every check in it to draw cash or buy goods.
- Never disclose your social security number, date of birth and even your mother's maiden name to anyone who you are not 100% sure of their reliability. Especially so through the internet. If you receive e-mails, and you are not 100% sure of the source, don't even open them, immediately discard. No one offers you millions of dollars through an e-mail, so don't be foolish and don't be tempted.
- Before dumping any garbage, make sure that any paperwork you have has been shredded. It may sound paranoid, but many identity thieves who have been caught, admit that people's trash is a great source of information to them. It is no coincidence that the sales of paper shredders have risen considerably as identity theft has become more and more widespread.
In other words, the simplest advice to anyone is, don't leave your identity lying around. It can be stolen, and relatively easily too. By adhering to the measures above, then there is no reason to become a victim.
